None of the injured had to be transferred to the hospital, but some the teachers suffered cuts, scrapes and bruises. Sheriff Tilley said he under stands the issue started Wednes day when the smaller student jumped Archer on King Street. “It was an off-campus dis pute that came on campus,” See FIGHT, 7 Teachers report they feel safe BY PETER WILLIAMS News Editor While more than dozen teachers were injured last week trying to break up a fight involving students, most Perquimans County teachers said they feel safe in their schools in a survey taken last fall. The N.C. Teacher Work ing Conditions survey is conducted every two years, but Perquimans County vol untarily does it on the off years. Last spring teachers gen erally responded as being happy with their working conditions and a vast ma jority plan to keep teaching right where they are. The school system has converted one teacher workday into a full school day and started tacking on an extra 15 minutes onto the end of school as of Nov. Armed robbery attempted From Staff Reports An armed man tried to rob the Nationwide Insur ance office on Market Street Tuesday morning, accord ing to Steve Bembridge, the owner of the building. He described the man as black and about 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-lO and medium to heavy set in his 30s or 40s. He was wearing a yellow bandana and a blue hoodie. Bembridge said no cash is kept at the business, and they haven’t taken cash payments in two years. Em ployees said he took their driver’s license and threat ened to hurt them. No other details were available Tuesday at press time. Early voting winds down BY PETER WILLIAMS News Editor As the final week of early voting starts for the No vember election, more than 2,600 Perquimans County residents have already weighed in their opinion. Through Friday some 1,449 women and 1,170 men have cast ballots. The ma jority have been Democrats (1,126) compared to 776 unaffiliated voters and 717 Republicans. White voters outnumbered black voters by a total of 2007-to-564. See EARLY VOTING, 4 Huge spaghetti supper planned BY PETER WILLIAMS News Editor For one night in Novem ber, spaghetti will be what’s for dinner for a big chunk of Perquimans County resi dents. At least that is what li- The brary supporters are hop ing for. They want to raise about $18,000 serving 3,000 spaghetti dinners on Nov. 19. The money will go to help properly furnish the new library, which is under construction on Church Street. All seven of Perquimans County’s Ruritan clubs are donating the food and other things like plates and forks. county is donating the Trick Or Treat use of Perquimans County Recreation Center. “When it all comes to gether there is 100 percent profit for the library,” said Doug Layden, the owner of Layden’s Supermarket, a Ruritan and also a member of the library board. Layden has made a lot of spaghetti before, but not this much. His Ruritan club held an event once and served more than 500 plates. For 3,000 spaghetti din ners he estimates using 280 pounds of hamburger, 60 pounds of sausage and 175 gallons of sauce. “That’s the reason I chose spaghetti for the fundraiser. It’s one of the easier dishes to put on and it doesn’t cost a lot of money. We’re plan ning on making the sauce that Thursday and Friday and I’ve got space at my store to refrigerate it. There will be two differ ent kinds of tickets sold.
